Airship Completes Sightseeing Test Flight, Ushering in a New Era

In an exhilarating leap forward for lighter-than-air technology, the AS700 multipurpose civilian airship embarked on a groundbreaking test flight. This demonstration, led by the State-owned Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC), showcases the enormous potential of airships in aerial sightseeing and beyond.

Test Flight Details

The majestic AS700 lifted off from Jingmen Zhanghe Airport in Hubei province at precisely, soaring gracefully through the skies before returning to its starting point after nearly two hours of serene flight. Guided by two skilled pilots, the airship elegantly navigated at an altitude of 500 meters, cruising at a leisurely 60 kilometers per hour over breathtaking scenic vistas. This thrilling endeavor marks a significant milestone in the AS700’s journey.

Next Steps in the Program

Next on the agenda, project leaders will focus on comprehensive training for pilots and ground crew, alongside collaborating with authorities to draft new regulations for aerial sightseeing, as highlighted in AVIC’s news release. This will ensure that the AS700 is not only a marvel of engineering but also fully compliant with safety and operational standards.

Development and Specifications

Conceived and meticulously crafted by the Special Aircraft Research Institute, an esteemed AVIC subsidiary in Jingmen, the AS700’s ambitious research and development began in August 2018. The primary goal was to revolutionize tourism with unmatched sightseeing air tours. Powered by robust piston engines, this marvel of aviation boasts a maximum takeoff weight of 4.15 metric tons and can achieve speeds up to 100 kilometers per hour. The AS700 is designed to comfortably accommodate one pilot and nine tourists, offering an extensive range of 700 kilometers and the ability to remain airborne for up to 10 hours.

Prototype and Certification

The development phase produced three prototypes. The first, an unmanned platform, successfully completed its technology demonstration flights. The second and third, piloted prototypes, are currently engaged in rigorous test flights to secure certification. Following an intensive testing regime, the AS700 earned its type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) in December, proudly becoming the first domestically certified manned airship in the nation. This prestigious certificate, awarded after stringent testing, ensures the airship’s design and performance meet the highest standards.

Broader Applications

Beyond its promising role in tourism, the versatile AS700 is poised to excel in a variety of civilian applications, including mineral prospecting, marine surveillance, police patrols, cargo transport, and emergency rescue missions, as envisioned by its innovative designers. This adaptability underscores the AS700’s potential to transform multiple sectors, enhancing both efficiency and effectiveness.

Future Prospects

With 18 orders already secured, AVIC is set to commence deliveries by the end of this year, according to Du Wei, a senior engineer at AVIC and project manager for the AS700. This is just the beginning of an exciting new era for airship enthusiasts and the broader aviation industry alike. The AS700 is not only a testament to China’s growing capabilities in advanced aviation technologies but also a beacon of innovation that promises to reshape how we think about and utilize airships in the modern world.
